Sunderland have confirmed they are appealing the red card shown to Alan Hutton during Saturday's victory over Hull City.
The on-loan defender was sent off on the stroke of half-time at the KC Stadium following an angry confrontation with Hull striker Jozy Altidore.
Hutton threw the ball at the Tigers striker, who reacted angrily with a headbutt.
The Black Cats went on to win 1-0 – their first away victory since the opening weekend of the Premier League season – but Hutton could miss their last two games of their campaign should the appeal fail.
"Sunderland have confirmed that they are to make representations to the FA following Alan Hutton's sending-off at the weekend against Hull City," confirmed a club statement.
"The defender is set to face a three-match ban for the red card he received during an incident involving Jozy Altidore and the club is looking to have this reduced."
