Chelsea and Manchester United could be dealt a big blow in their pursuit of Raphael Varane, as Paris Saint-Germain are said to be preparing a huge bid for the highly-rated defender, Express reports.
The 21-year-old has been a top target for the Premier League duo ever since the summer, with Jose Mourinho aiming to find a potential replacement for John Terry, while Louis van Gaal is still keen on reinforcing his back line.
Varane is seen as a top centre-back candidate for both clubs and could be interested in a switch, after suggestions that he is unhappy serving as backup to Sergio Ramos and Pepe at Real Madrid.
And PSG manager Laurent Blanc has revealed his intentions to add the France international into his star-studded squad.
“For me Raphael Varane is the prototype of central defender I want on my team,” he said.
“He has the technique that lets you project forward, in addition to its excellent defensive work.”
However, with the Madrid star keen on a regular role, a switch to the Ligue-1 could see him once again used as back up to Brazilian trio, David Luiz, Thiago Silva, and even Marquinhos.
Van Gaal will surely hope the lure of first team football will convince him to make the move to Old Trafford, with the Dutch boss possibly set to hand Varane a place in the first-team.
