Chelsea and Manchester United have been dealt a blow in their pursuit of Real Madrid star Gareth Bale, with the former Tottenham man set to sign a new contract at the reigning Champions League winners, according to the Express.
Both United and Chelsea had been heavily linked with an astonishing £100million move for the Welshman, who completed a world record £86million move to the Bernabeu in the summer of 2013.
Reports had suggested Real Madrid were ready to consider offers of that figure, in order to fund moves for Borussia Dortmund star Marco Reus and Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero.
But now it appears the saga has taken a fresh twist, with Bale ready to sign an improved deal to keep him at the club until 2021, with an annual £15million a year salary.
Bale’s current deal expires in 2019, but the 25-year-old is ready to sign a new deal having helped Carlo Ancelotti’s side to the top of La Liga, whilst also playing a crucial part in their Champions League success last season, scoring the second goal in the 4-1 win over Atletico Madrid in May.
