Chelsea have joined Manchester United in the race to sign Bayern Munich star Thomas Muller as they eye a replacement for Diego Costa, according to reports from the Mirror.
Muller has been heavily linked with a move away from the Allianz Arena in the summer, with the Red Devils reportedly having a mega £70million bid turned down by the Bavarians.
Now it seems English champions Chelsea are also looking at the Germany international, who they see as a possible replacement for petulant striker Costa.
The Spain international has lately found himself clashing with manager Jose Mourinho, firstly in their Champions League win over Maccabi Tel-Aviv before then throwing a bib at the Portuguese this weekend.
However, Bayern legend Lothar Matthaus has urged Muller to remain with the Bundesliga champions, stating that there is no other team more suited to his style of play.
Matthaus said: “He does not need Manchester United or Chelsea. “Barcelona perhaps could use him, but I do not know whether he can deal with their game.
“My opinion is that he should definitely stay at Bayern for his lifetime.
“He started his professional career at Bayern and I think he should end his career here. He does not need any new challenge as he is always playing at the highest level every year at Bayern.”
This means Chelsea may have to look elsewhere, with Premier League hitman Jamie Vardy and West Bromwich Albion’s Saido Berahino being monitored.
Muller, 26, has already scored 20 goals in just 21 games this season.
