Chelsea decided to retain the services of John Obi Mikel after they were unable to secure a deadline day move for Juventus star Paul Pogba, according to reports from the Metro.
The 28-year-old was linked with a club exit throughout the summer as Turkish giants Besiktas stepped up their chase for the player.
Manager Jose Mourinho was believed to be open to the departure of the Nigeria international as he is currently regarded as surplus to requirements.
Mikel was even said to be keen on completing a move to Besiktas, but after the Blues failed in their pursuit of Pogba, his exit was ruled out as well.
The Juventus star has been a transfer target for a host of top European clubs during the summer as Mourinho plotted a mega £87.5million offer to lure him to Stamford Bridge.
However, that wasn’t the case as the Portuguese boss missed out on yet another top transfer target on deadline day.
He also failed to complete a deal for defensive target John Stones from Everton, who was the subject of four rejected bids from the current English champions.
