Chelsea are leading the race against Manchester City for Everton star Ross Barkley, Express reports.
The Citizens were extremely interested in signing Barkley in the upcoming transfer window in order to increase the number of home-grown players on their roster, making a £35million offer for the highly rated Englishman.
However the Toffees rejected the bid, claiming that Barkley is valued much higher at £50million and City boss Manuel Pellegrini is prepared to look elsewhere to find his desired player.
This has therefore opened the door for Chelsea to make a possible swoop, as Blues manager Jose Mourinho is also keen on the 20-year-old.
Chelsea also seem to have a close relationship with Everton after selling Romelu Lukaku and allowing Christian Atsu to go on loan at Goodison Park.
Reports suggest that Mourinho could bring down the £50million price tag placed on Barkley’s head and bring one of the country’s best young players to Stamford Bridge.
Everton had high hopes for Barkley after a solid performance in the World Cup, but the midfielder picked up a knee injury in training to miss the start of the season.
