Former Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho is close to agreeing a deal to replace Louis van Gaal as Manchester United manager, according to reports from the Manchester Evening News.
Mourinho has been heavily linked with the job at Old Trafford in recent weeks amid the Red Devils’ current struggles under Van Gaal.
Van Gaal may have appeased some of the fans and critics after their emphatic 3-0 win over Stoke City on Tuesday, but executive vice chairman Ed Woodward is expected to replace the Dutchman in the summer.
However, Van Gaal’s contract runs till the summer of 2017, and some in the United hierarchy want the former Barcelona manager to see out his deal in Manchester.
His performances in the second half of the season will greatly determine the outcome, with their priority to finish in the top four and qualify for the Champions League.
