Chelsea have been quick to dispel rumblings that striker Diego Costa bit Gareth Barry in yesterday’s FA Cup clash.
The Spain international was given his marching orders for an altercation with the Everton midfielder in the London club’s 2-0 defeat to the Toffees at Goodison Park yesterday.
Footage of the clash shows Costa push his face into Barry’s neck, with speculation in the media that the former Atletico Madrid striker may well have bit the former England international.
However, with the potential for retrospective action against the player, Chelsea have been quick to clarify that Costa did not bite his opponent.
“Diego spoke to club officials and expressed regret over his reaction to the challenge from Barry that led to his red card,” BBC Sport report an official statement as reading.
“But Diego was also very clear that he did not bite him at any point during that altercation.”
Costa has not been far from controversy during his time in England, with the way he plays the game on the border of the laws leading to controversy around the player.
Luis Suarez received a lengthy ban for biting Branislav Ivanovic while he was in Liverpool colours and Chelsea will be keen to avoid a similar fate for their centre forward.
