Chelsea are planning a record-breaking £34million offer for Everton star John Stones, according to reports from the Express.
Stones has been heavily linked with a move to Stamford Bridge in recent weeks, with a £20million bid from the Blues only being rejected by the Toffees last Friday.
However, Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho is adamant on signing a centre-back in the summer transfer window, and the Portuguese boss sees Stones as the perfect long-term replacement for club captain John Terry.
It was thought that Mourinho would only up the bid to £26million after Everton’s ‘hands off’ stance, but now it looks like the Premier League champions are prepared to beat the £30million Manchester United paid for Rio Ferdinand, which will makes Stones the most expensive ever English defender.
The 21-year-old was a mainstay for Roberto Martinez’s Everton side during the second half of the Premier League campaign, making 28 appearances in all competitions, scoring one goal.
