Chelsea set their transfer sights on Marseille ace

Guingamp midfielder Gianelli Imbula

Chelsea are keen to sign Marseille midfielder Gianelli Imbula, according to talkSPORT.

Reports in France suggest the Blues are still keen to sign the young midfielder who they tracked in the summer.

Jose Mourinho attempted to bring the 21-year-old to Stamford Bridge, only to see Imbula opt to join Marseille instead, where he has enjoyed an excellent start to the season.

Imbula earned his £6.6million move to Marseille after starring for Guingamp last season, and becoming Ligue 2 Player of the Year.

He has started five of Marseille’s seven league fixtures this season, and also impressed in their 2-1 Champions League defeat to Arsenal last week.

Jose Mourinho is aware January is too early to bid for a player who only made a move in the summer, although he is still thought to be keen to bring the midfielder to Stamford Bridge in the future.

Mourinho currently has a luxury of midfielders at Stamford Bridge, added to by the signings of Willian, Andre Schurrle and Marco Van Ginkel in the summer, whilst Michael Essien has returned from a loan spell at Real Madrid.

He was linked with a number of holding midfielders in the summer as well as Imbula, with the likes of Sami Khedira and Daniele De Rossi thought to be heading to Stamford Bridge at one point or another.

Mourinho is in no hurry to sign a new midfielder however, with John Obi Mikel impressing despite being heavily linked with a move away himself during the summer.
