Chelsea set to miss out on Real Madrid star

Real Madrid defender Fabio Coentrao

Chelsea look set to fail in their attempts to sign Fabio Coentrao in the summer after suggestions that Real Madrid are to use the defender to sign striker Edinson Cavani.

According to TalkSport, The Spanish giants are currently looking for a new striker, with Napoli’s Cavani catching their eye. The Uruguayan has scored 25 goals this season, helping Napoli to second in Serie A.

However, Tuttosport claim Real are apparently reluctant to meet the £54m fee Napoli are demanding to require Cavani’s signature, and will instead offer a player plus cash deal. Madrid are set to offer the Italian team £35m and Coentrao, to tempt them into releasing the dangerous forward.

Chelsea will be watching on, after being linked with both Coentrao and Cavani over recent months. Coentrao cost Real £26.4m when he left Benfica in 2011, but the 25-year-old has struggled to make himself the number one choice this season under manager Jose Mourinho.

The Portuguese international would fit Chelsea’s style of attacking wing backs, but it appears Madrid won’t be willing to sell the star to the London club, in order to secure the services of Cavani.

Coentrao will be hoping to feature in Real Madrid’s home game against Real Mallorca on Saturday, as both Real and neighbours Atletico Madrid fight for 2nd place in the La Liga table.
