Chelsea star confirmed as England vice-captain

Chelsea midfielder Frank Lampard has been confirmed as England’s vice-captain for the World Cup this summer, as reported by Sky Sports.

Lampard has been a bit-part player for the Blues this season and is unlikely to be the main man for England this summer either.

However Roy Hodgson feels his experience was not only worth taking to the World Cup but also to hand him the vice captaincy should Steven Gerrard become unavailable.

Hodgson has admitted that Lamaprd has always been a key member of his squad and that his leadership will be vital for the younger player.

“Frank Lampard is vice-captain,” said Hodgson. “Frank’s been the vice-captain all along in Steven [Gerrard]’s absences, which I think has been two, he’s stepped up quite brilliantly.

“I’ve always thought that he was going to be a key member of this 23 because of his experience and what he brings to the team apart from pure footballing ability.

“He brings a lot of other things to us in terms of his leadership qualities and characteristics.”
