Chelsea to battle rivals for German defender

Chelsea are set to rival Arsenal for German defender Skhodran Mustafi, according to Spanish media AS.

Sport Witness are reporting that the Spanish paper believe Antonio Conte is ready to turn to the Valencia centre-back, as he continues his search for a new defender in his first transfer window in charge.

The Blues have been heavily linked with a move for Napoli’s Kalidou Koulibaly all summer, but with a deal still not yet in place, the Italian boss is looking at alternative options.

The news will come as a concern to Arsene Wenger and Arsenal fans, with the club taking their time in the transfer window this summer with little activity, after missing out on reported targets Jamie Vardy and Gonzalo Higuain.

The Gunners have been heavily linked with a move for a new centre-back when it was confirmed that Per Mertesacker will miss the start of the new season with an injury. And it seemed like Wenger wanted one German in to support the other, with Mustafi heavily tipped to join the Emirates outfit.

As it happens, Mustafi is due to be in England this week, as Valencia play Bournemouth and Crystal Palace in pre-season friendlies.
