Chelsea will need to make John Stones the most expensive English defender in history if they are lure the Everton star to Stamford Bridge, according to The Telegraph.
The England international is acknowledged as one of the most promising young players coming through the national game, with the Blues said to have had a £20 million bid for the star rejected earlier this week.
However, it is believed that Jose Mourinho holds Stones in high regard and is willing to surpass the £30 million fee Manchester United paid to land Rio Ferdinand to capture the Everton centre-half.
Stones looks like he has the potential to be a long-term successor to John Terry for club and country, with Roberto Martinez’s men facing a real fight to hold onto their prize asset this summer.
The young defender, currently on a pre-season tour in Singapore with the Toffees, has said he is committed to Everton.
