Cisse has notched a notable 20 goals in 28 appearances so far this season for the Bundesliga’s 8th placed club. He only trails Bayern Munich’s Mario Gomez in the scoring steaks and his prolific strike rate has caught Arsene Wenger’s attention.
The Gunners haven’t been as free scoring as they would have liked in recent weeks and a target man such as Cisse has the potential to complement the class of Robin Van Persie. Rumours in the German press are suggesting that Freiburg are only willing to do business for their star striker if they receive bids in excess of £13 million.
The club do however seem resigned to losing the 25 year old former Metz front man. General manager Dirk Dufner was quoted in Goal.com as saying, “[Cisse] has a contract with our club until June 2014 and he is a key player within our first team. However, I feel that it will be a challenge to keep Papiss here.”
Goal.com also revealed a source close to the player had told them back in December that “Freiburg are a great but small club so it’s very likely he will go in the summer. And Cisse is worthy of Champions League football, that is what he’s aiming for.”
These comments pave the way for Arsenal to make a move for Cisse in the summer. Providing Arsene Wenger has the funds at his disposal and meets Freiburg’s valuation of the player.
