Manchester City boss Manuel Pellegrini has blasted his players following their miserable 3-0 loss to Liverpool on Wednesday, according to reports from the Mirror.
The Citizens got one better of the Reds when they beat Jurgen Klopp’s men via a penalty shoot-out in the Captal One Cup final during the weekend, but the Merseyside club got their revenge by putting three goals past City at Anfield.
And Pellegrini was almost shell-shocked by their mediocre display, with the result now seeing them a massive 10 points behind league leaders Leicester City with just ten more games to go.
The Chilean has thus warned his players to improve on their form, or forget about lifting the Premier League trophy when the campaign ends in May.
“Of course we cannot play in the way we did today. Not only because we concede three goals but we didn’t shoot once in the Liverpool goal,” he admitted.
“Yes, if we continue the run then we can not challenge. But I am not thinking about the title and not thinking not to qualify for the Champions’ League. The most important thing is to recover our performance in the Premier League because we lost those last three.
“I am surprised, we didn’t expect to lose here 3-0. From the beginning we were not fresh. Liverpool had more energy. They recovered the ball at high pace. We didn’t deserve to be 2-0 down at half time, but in the second half they played better.”
The Sky Blues could even miss out on a Champions League spot if their downfall continues, with Manchester United now level on points while West Ham United are only one behind.
