The shock revelation comes after Palace lost away at Stoke City after taking the lead in the first half thanks to Marouane Chamakh.
The Palace board are not convinced that Holloway’s style of management will suit them in the top flight and they are already fearing the worst after two straight defeats.
Newcastle boss Alan Pardew would be their main target to take over from Holloway should they decide to take the strongest possible action with the former Crystal Palace player also under pressure in the North East.
The South London club would not make an approach for Pardew while he was still employed at St James’ Park due to his heft compensation package but if and when the former West Ham and Southampton boss loses his job, Palace will make their move.
