Manchester City are said to be stepping up their attempts to sign Roma's Daniele De Rossi, with the player's agent flying to England on Thursday according to Sky Sports.

It has been a quiet summer in the transfer market for the Premier League champions so far, with the addition of Jack Rodwell the only signing of note at the Etihad Stadium.

However, Roberto Mancini has been an admirer of his countryman for some time, and has made moves to sign the Italy international in the past.

Despite De Rossi signing a new contract with the capital-city club last term, City are believed to be ready to try and sign him once more after being impressed with his showing at Euro 2012.

It is thought that De Rossi's agent flew to Manchester on Thursday and met with executives from the Premier League club to discuss a potential transfer.
