Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini admitted he was disappointed to have lost the Carling Cup semi-final to local rivals Manchester United.

City lost 3-1 in the second leg at Old Trafford as they slumped to a 4-3 aggregate defeat with Wayne Rooney grabbing the all-important winning goal in stoppage time.

City have not reached a Final since losing the 1981 FA Cup showpiece to Tottenham Hotspur but Mancini still has hopes of his team reaching Wembley later this season.

He said:"After our goal I did not think it was possible for us to lose. I am very disappointed because, apart from ten minutes, we played very well.

"But next time we will have to pay more attention because Wayne Rooney is one of the best strikers in the world. If you give him a chance to score he will take it.

"Kolo Toure and Emmanuel Adebayor are back with us now and Joleon Lescott is nearly fit. With those players I think it is possible for us to get into the top four.

"But it is important that we improve because of this game and at least we still have the FA Cup to play for."

On Robinho's proposed loan switch to Santos, the former Internazionale boss added:"It is possible that he will go to play for Santos or another team, so we preferred not to risk him tonight.

"But that is the only reason he was not involved. If he is still here at the end of the transfer window, he can play for us."Subscribe to Football FanCast News Headlines by Email
