According to a report in the Derby Telegraph, Derby County defender Jason Shackell has been ruled out for the rest of the season after undergoing surgery on his back.

What’s the word, then?

Well, the centre-back has been absent for the Rams’ last six matches because of a long-term back problem, and has only made 10 appearances for the club all season – his previous outing came against Leicester City in the FA Cup.

The 33-year-old has now had an operation in order to try and sort out the injury, and manager Gary Rowett is hoping to have Shackell back in time for pre-season.

What did Rowett say?

He told RamsTV: "Shacks had an operation a few days ago and it was something that needed to be done to clear up what has been a long-term issue.

"The plan is for him to come back for pre-season training ready to go.”

How big a miss will he be in the run-in?

Quite a big one, but they will be able to cope.

It suggests that despite the fact that they are nine points from the play-off positions with eight Championship fixtures left to play, they are already planning for next season – and that is completely fair enough.

Rowett won't have given up hope just yet, but of course a top six finish looks out of reach.

Will Shackell be a starter next season?

It’s hard to say.

Gary Rowett won’t have seen the 33-year-old in action yet and that’s why it is vital that he is back for pre-season, in order to stake his claim for a place in the team.

His age certainly could go against him, but with the future of Chris Baird uncertain, Rowett might need all of the competition he can get in that position.
