West Ham manager Sam Allardyce reckons Stewart Downing is currently the best midfielder in the Premier League.
The former Liverpool winger has been in terrific form this season having moved to a more central role in the midfield.
There had been talk that the 30-year old may gain a re-call to Roy Hodgson’s England squad.
However, the midfielder missed out leaving the Hammers’ manager mythed with the decision.
He said: “I don’t think there is anybody playing in midfield that is better than Stewart Downing – he was my man of the match against QPR.
“The confidence is growing again in Stewart and he’s showing his quality.”
“I think all the new signings have settled in well and those who have played have made good starts.
‘We have a bit of a stronger squad this season which I think helps the manager. ‘We have a lot more options now and I am eager to score goals this season.”
