Dutch legend slams stupid Man United hierarchy for previous managerial appointment

Dutch legend Johan Cruyff has blasted Manchester United as “stupid” for previously appointing David Moyes as manager, Daily Star reports.

When Sir Alex Ferguson stepped down from the United helm after 26 years, the long-serving boss appointed Moyes to be his successor before the end of the 2012-2013 season.

However under the former Everton manager’s tenure, United were nowhere close to their previous heights and the Scot was sacked just after just 10 months in charge, with the Red Devils finishing in an embarrassing seventh.

Louis van Gaal was the hired before his last tournament with the Netherlands, leading the Dutch to a third place finish in the World Cup.

Yet legendary Dutch attacker Johan Cruyff claims the United hierarchy made a huge mistake in initially hiring Moyes, which has led the club into their current position.

He said: “Manchester paid for their stupidness and now they have got to recover.

“Moyes is a very good coach because I’ve seen many many years in Everton, but he’s not a coach which should fit with Manchester United because the focus for both teams are totally different.

“That’s why the biggest mistake is to ask Moyes to come to Manchester United because it’s a totally different team, a totally different mentality.

“The basic mistake was to sign him on. I think he is a great manager but not for Manchester United. He’s just a great manager for another type of team.”
