Stoke City’s Ryan Shawcross and Cardiff City defender Ben Turner have both rejected the chance to represent Wales as they are focussed on playing for their native England according to Welsh boss Chris Coleman.
Shawcross is available as he studied for five years in Wales and Turner is eligible via his Welsh grandparents.
The uncapped pair were approached by the Welsh FA regarding the opportunity to switch allegiance this summer but Coleman revealed both defenders turned him down and he could understand their reasoning.
“I talked to Ryan and had a good conversation with him and his dream is to play for England,” Coleman told BBC Sport.
“He was very honest and sadly for us he wants to pursue his England dream.”
“I totally understand and respect that and we shook hands and I wished him all the best. I hope he fulfils that dream and gets his England cap.”
“There is no further conversation there and both of those avenues have been closed off,” said Coleman.
Shawcross has been tipped for an England cap for over a year now and time will tell if his patience will be rewarded.
