Everton’s James McCarthy will be out for 3 weeks following a groin injury and subsequent surgery.
The news comes via a statement from manager Ronald Koeman, which was tweeted by Everton’s official Twitter handle, and means the Republic of Ireland international will miss the trip to Sunderland on Monday night.

McCarthy has started two of Everton’s three league games so far this season and was looking to make his mark on new manager Koeman amid heavy competition for places in the Toffees’ midfield – but the injury now gives the likes of Idrissa Gueye and Gareth Barry the chance to shine ahead of a long campaign.
