Everton are close to securing a £8million deal for Manchester United defender Jonny Evans, according to reports from the Guardian.
After spending nine years with the club, Evans is set to leave Old Trafford and join the Toffees with just one year remaining on his current contract.
The 27-year-old was considered one of manager Louis van Gaal’s first-choice centre-backs when the Dutchman arrived to take over the helm last summer, but a series of injuries and a spitting incident involving Papiss Cisse limited his playing time.
The Northern Ireland international will be a welcome addition to the Everton squad after Sylvain Distin joined Bournemouth earlier in the summer.
The Toffees could also lose John Stones, with Chelsea reportedly interested in the highly-rated youngster.
Stones’ departure would mean Evans will slot right in the middle of defence alongside Phil Jagielka as head coach Roberto Martinez prepares for the new season.
Evans played 19 games in all competitions in the previous campaign, scoring no goals.
