Everton star set for new contract

Everton defender Leighton Baines

Everton boss Roberto Martinez has confirmed that the club have offered left back Leighton Baines a new improved contract at Goodison Park, as reported by the Daily Mirror.

The Toffees rejected a bid from Manchester United for the England defender during the summer transfer window.

The former Wigan left back was inspirational last season for the Merseyside club and his fine form and loyalty is set to be rewarded with a bumper new contract that has been offered this week.

Martinez has claimed that Baines is the most important player at Goodison Park right now and is keen to tie the 28 year old local lad down for the long term.

“Leighton is the most important player for us now and in the future,” said the Everton manager.

“We want to do what we can to reward that and let him know he deserves our appreciation.

“Contract talks will be opened but it is not just about the contract, it is about making sure he knows how much we want him and how much we appreciate him.”
