Former Arsenal and England defender Viv Anderson has urged Kyle Walker not to leave Tottenham Hotspur this summer.

For many weeks now it has been widely speculated that the right-back will be on his way out of North London after being dropped for key games last season.

Kieran Trippier was preferred by manager Mauricio Pochettino in fixtures against Chelsea, Arsenal and Manchester United during the tail-end of the campaign.

Manchester City have been the frontrunners for Walker’s signature, with the The Mirror recently reporting that the North-West outfit will open talks with their transfer target this week.

The British publication claims that City - backed by billionaire Abu Dhabi owners - are prepared to pay in excess of £40m for Walker.

Anderson believes, though, that the England international could go places with Spurs as they have made considerable progress over the last few seasons.

Pochettino has shaped a young team and guided them to second place in the Premier League last season, ensuring that they finished above arch rivals Arsenal for the first time in 22 years.

While Anderson thinks that Walker should stay put, he understands that wages could be the deciding factor.

The Sheffield Telegraph quotes him as saying:

“Tottenham are an up and coming side. They have a lot of young lads in their team and can only get better. If I was Kyle Walker I would stay at Tottenham because I think they are exciting to watch. Like I said, they have some really good, young vibrant players, [but] if it’s down to money I think Man City have got a bit more than Tottenham.

“It’s a fine balance but if you’re asking me if I would leave, personally, I would say ‘no’, I would stay with Tottenham because in the next four of five years they’ll be a very good team.”
