Ex-Liverpool boss backs club to finish above Man United

Former Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez believes this is the season that the Merseyside club finish above rivals Manchester United, as reported by the Evening Standard.

The Anfield club go into the weekend five points clear of the Red Devils and could extend that further with a victory at home to Aston Villa today as United face a tough trip to Chelsea tomorrow.

Liverpool have been longing for Champions League football over the past few years but have had to settle for Europa League or even no European football at all like this season.

The lack of midweek fixtures appears to be helping Brendan Rodgers’ side though and striker Luis Suarez at times is single handily demolish their opposition.

Benitez is confident that the Reds will finish in the top four, thus knocking United out of it.

“I think it will be the season when my old club Liverpool will finish in the top four, and get back to experiencing the great Anfield Champions League nights which were very special to me,” said Benitez.

“I think there will be a changing of places because Liverpool coming fourth will mean Manchester United finishing outside of the Champions League.

“It is hard to talk confidently about these things in a crazy British season, of course, but Liverpool will have one important advantage when January is over.”
