Former Liverpool defender Sami Hyypia has taken aim at Chelsea’s treatment over Mohamed Salah, albeit in a subtle way.

The Egyptian attacker spent two years at Stamford Bridge, but he failed to cement a regular spot in the team.

In total, Salah, who had two loan spells at Fiorentina and Roma, featured just 19 times and found the back of the net twice before moving to Italy on a permanent basis.

Last season at Roma, the 25-year-old had a much better time on the pitch, scoring 19 goals in all competitions and creating 11 assists.

That form attracted Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp, who has since sealed Salah’s signature for a reported £34m fee.

Pressure will come with that price tag, and the fact that the Egyptian failed at Chelsea could cause concern among some Liverpool fans, but Hyypia believes that the Blues were at fault when they had him in their ranks.

The former defender has suggested that the Premier League giants did little to help Salah fulfil his potential.

He told 5times:

“I think Salah has developed from the Chelsea days that Chelsea maybe couldn’t get his level right and he was on loan at a few other clubs to get experience. I think he’s a better player than a few years ago at Chelsea so definitely strengthens the team.”
