Former Manchester United defender Gary Neville has stated that Cristiano Ronaldo should not come back to Old Trafford and instead has suggested that the Red Devils should focus their efforts on signing Gareth Bale.
The current Ballon d’Or holder was a fans favourite with the English club and left to join Real Madrid for a world-record fee.
United fans have prayed for a day where the gifted attacker would return, but as yet it has not happened with the 30-year-old penning a new deal at the Santiago Bernabeu this year.
Despite prolonging his stay in the Spanish capital, Ronaldo has openly admitted his love for the Old Trafford side on many occasions and not ruled out putting on the red shirt again in the future.
Louis van Gaal’s men have also been linked with a move for Bale over the years and Neville has stated that signing the ex-Tottenham star rather than Ronaldo would be the best course of action for his former employers.
“I am not sure it is such a good thing for Cristiano to come back” Neville is quoted as saying by The Mirror.
“The emotion says come back but do you remember when Newcastle used to bring back their old players to be manager?
“And then Liverpool started doing it and I thought “No. Let’s not start becoming a club like that” and this kind of pining for the past. I don’t really want that.
“I’d prefer us to get Gareth Bale and that’s no disrespect to Cristiano who I think is possibly the biggest talent I have ever played with – not the best player I ever played with – but the biggest talent.”
