Rafael Benitez is intending to strengthen his Newcastle United squad ahead of the club’s return to the Premier League following recent promotion from the Championship.
As expected, numerous names have been linked with moves to St James’ Park, and one particular position that Benitez seems keen to bolster is in between the sticks.
Pepe Reina is the latest goalkeeper to be mentioned in the media, but the Daily Mail claims that the Magpies are likely to miss out on the Spaniard as he reportedly intends to fulfil his contract at Napoli.
Reina is well aware of Benitez’s leadership having played under him at Liverpool, but it appears that there may not be a reunion just yet.
Newcastle currently have Karl Darlow, Rob Elliot, Tim Krul and Matz Sels in their goalkeeping ranks, but the latter is expected to leave on loan next season.
Given, who spent 12 years playing for the North-East outfit, believes that Benitez already has a good enough crop to choose from, reports the Chronicle.
He told talkSPORT:
“Pepe Reina has got a relationship with Rafa Benitez, so you can see the link there, but Newcastle have got four or five goalkeepers who can play in the Premier League.
“There is talk of them having X amount of pounds to spend in the summer and a lot of players coming in. Mangala has been linked with a move to Newcastle and I think it will be an interesting summer up there.”
