Former Premier League referee Graham Poll has revealed that Manchester United’s disallowed goal against Wolfsburg would have stood last season, according to reports from the Daily Mail.
The Red Devils thought that they levelled their crunch Champions League fixture at half-time when a Jesse Lingard cross passed Juan Mata in the box straight into the back of the net.
However, Mata was in an offside position and despite not touching the ball, the Spain international was believed to be distracting the goalkeeper which correctly rules out the goal.
And the decision had a big effect on United’s Champions League campaign, as despite finally equalizing in the 82nd minute, they were unable to hold on when Naldo grabbed his second and the winning goal for the Bundesliga side to send Louis van Gaal and his men to the Europa League due to PSV Eindhoven’s victory over CSKA Moscow.
The Red Devils will therefore be in the final 31 draw which also includes Premier League rivals Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur.
