Fabio Capello claims Wayne Rooney is in a ‘better place’

Fabio Capello believes Wayne Rooney is in a 'better place' than he was when England faced Switzerland last month.

Head coach Capello has confirmed the Manchester United striker will start Tuesday's Euro 2012 qualifier against Montenegro at Wembley.

Rooney had been a doubt for the latest international fixture after picking up an ankle injury and being taken out of the firing line by United boss Sir Alex Ferguson following allegations about his private life.

The 24-year-old scored in last month's 3-1 qualifying victory over Switzerland at the height of his personal problems but has not played competitively since September 26.

However, Capello believes the striker is better prepared both physically and mentally for Tuesday's encounter.

He explained:"I spoke with Sir Alex who told me, when I decided the squad, that Rooney would be fit because the ankle problem was not so big.

"I spoke with Rooney about the situation, his situation. I monitored him during the training and he trained perfectly, really well.

"I think it's important to monitor the players in training. You can understand a lot of things from that.

"He's focused on the game. He's happy. He's smiling a lot.

"He's in a good moment, better than he was when we played against Switzerland."
