Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson has expressed his disappointment that Wayne Rooney played almost 90 minutes for England on Wednesday night.

Ferguson suggested in the build-up to the 3-1 friendly victory over Egypt that the in-form striker was struggling with a knee injury.

Rooney had been left out of the starting line-up for United's previous game - the Carling Cup Final at Wembley.

Ferguson was therefore surprised that Rooney played 86 minutes of the England game on what he described as an energy-sapping Wembley pitch.

Speaking about United's Premier League game with Wolves on Saturday, he explained:"We have to assess Wayne because he played almost 90 minutes for England the other night at Wembley, which I was disappointed in.

"When you are playing on that pitch for almost an hour on Sunday and then nearly a full game on Wednesday it's far too much.

"Now he is a doubt for Wolves."Subscribe to Football FanCast News Headlines by Email
