Sir Alex Ferguson is on the verge of a surprising bid for £10million-rated Hoffenheim midfielder Gylfi Sigurdsson; who has impressed on loan at Swansea City since January; according to the Daily Mirror.

The Manchester United manager was at the Liberty Stadium on Saturday to watch the Swans thrilling 4-4 draw with Wolves, a game that saw Sigurdsson impress in the centre of midfield, not for the first time since his arrival in South Wales on loan.

United have also sent Mike Phelan and Martin Ferguson to recent Swansea games to cast an eye over the 22-year-old, who is reportedly available for £10million in the summer as he looks to ensure a move back to English football once again.

Swansea; who visit Old Trafford next weekend; will also be interested in signing the midfielder permanently after he has scored seven goals in 14 appearances so far for them in his loan spell. However, the attraction of joining Manchester United may be enough to persuade Sigurdsson to complete a dream move in the summer.

A successful spell at Reading early in his career, where the Icelandic international scored 18 goals in 42 appearances earned his a big money move to Germany, but with the likes of Paul Scholes and Ryan Giggs nearing the end of their playing days and a consistent number of injuries to their midfield, United could be the perfect setting for a promising career to unfold.
