Chief executive David Gill has reassured Manchester United fans that Sir Alex Ferguson will be given funds to strengthen his squad during the summer transfer window.

Club owners the Glazer family have come under fire from disgruntled fans for their perceived failure to back the manager in the transfer market in recent times.

United came up short in Europe this season after losing to Bayern Munich in the quarter-finals of the Champions League.

Meanwhile, league leaders Chelsea are favourites to end the Old Trafford's club's three-year dominance of the Premier League with just two games remaining in the season.

Ferguson opted not to re-invest most of the £80million recouped from the world-record sale of Cristiano Ronaldo to Real Madrid last year, but Gill has moved to appease fans by revealing that funds will be available this summer.

"I can look you in the eye and tell you straight that we have the transfer funds available to the manager," he said.

"Targets have been discussed already, as you'd expect, but it's not our style to talk about names and it never will be."

Ferguson has already agreed deals to sign Chris Smalling from Fulham and Mexican starlet Javier Hernandez ahead of the summer transfer window reopening next month.Subscribe to Football FanCast News Headlines by Email
