Ferguson knows importance of hectic festive season

Sir Alex Ferguson has stated that the festive season fixture list will be crucial to Manchester United’s chances this term, but has confidence in the squad at his disposal.

The Red Devils are in a battle with cross-town rivals Manchester City to retain their Premier League crown, and have been knocked out of the Champions League.

With a congested fixture list on the near horizon, the Scottish coach knows that he will need to call upon his squad depth.

“December is a particularly busy month when we often play eight or nine games,” he told Inside United.

“We’ve got a Boxing Day game, a New Year’s Eve game… it’s going to be a hectic spell and that’s when the squad really kicks in.”

United do not have a track record of signing new players in the January transfer window and Ferguson has stated that any new faces in the new year would be unlikely.

However, former Old Trafford midfielder Nicky Butt believes that the Premier League champions should potentially reinforce.

“Every team can improve, no matter who they are,” Butt told the club’s official website.

“Even Barcelona can improve so I’m sure Sir Alex will sign players, whether it be in midfield, defence or up front. He’s always looking to enhance his squad.”
