Fernando Torres earns Sir Alex Ferguson blast

Sir Alex Ferguson has accused Liverpool striker Fernando Torres of cheating during Manchester United's 3-2 victory over their bitter rivals at Old Trafford on Sunday.

United took the honours following a sensational hat-trick from Dimitar Berbatov.

However, despite leading 2-0 midway through the second half, it was an uncomfortable ride for the home side after they allowed Liverpool to claw their way back on level terms.

Steven Gerrard converted a penalty following Jonny Evans' crude lunge on Torres in the box.

But it was Gerrard's 70th minute free-kick, after John O'Shea was adjudged to have pulled down Torres, that left Ferguson angry.

Berbatov's 84th minute header secured the points for the Red Devils but afterwards the veteran United boss singled out Torres for fierce criticism.

"I have watched it again," he said."Fernando Torres made a meal of it – an absolute meal of it.

"There is no doubt he tried to get the player sent off."

Meanwhile, Ferguson also claimed Liverpool were fortunate to find themselves back in the match following a dominant United display.

He added: "It was a game we absolutely dominated and I was saying to myself: "It could've been 1".

"So when it looked like ending 2-2, it would have been a travesty of a scoreline, but it was a great result at the end.

"They had the momentum when it went to 2-2, but they never offered anything did they?

"This was always going to be a test. The build-up to these games is such that, if one doesn't win, it's a catastrophe.

"For Liverpool, this is a catastrophe."
