Manchester United have strengthened their talented squad up and down the pitch this summer, bringing in some of the best and most exciting players in world football.
From Eric Bailly to Zlatan Ibrahimovic; the Untied first team is brimming with class and quality.
However, despite signing a host of fantastic players; it seems that Jose Mourinho is still not content with his squad.
In particular, the centre of the Manchester United defence is an area of particular concern, with Mourinho reportedly keen to bring more experience to his back line.
Given that Chris Smalling is now Manchester United’s only experienced, natural central defender; his concerns do make sense.
With that, here are FIVE experienced centre-backs Man United should sign
Leonardo Bonucci has been a target of a host of top European sides this summer.
Antonio Conte’s arrival at Chelsea drew links for the Italian stalwart, but it is Manchester United who have had the most frequent links with the talented defender.
At 29 years old, Bonucci would definitely add experience; but he would also provide United with a whole lot more. Aggressive tackling, aerial dominance and tactical awareness; he is the complete package.
He will definitely cost a hefty chunk of change; but it would be worth it.
31 year old Joao Miranda has been a long-term target of Manchester United.
Currently plying his trade with Inter Milan in Italy, Miranda is a stalwart-like defender, offering pace and technical ability to any defence.
He has played across Europe, and has had more years in the game than most of the United squad combined.
If you’re looking for experience; look no further than Joao Miranda.
Diego Godin would definitely be a hard-get for Manchester United; but they know exactly what they would be getting.
Godin is one of the best in world football, and at 30 years old he knows everything there is to know about defending.
His time with Atletico Madrid has also exposed him to some of the highest highs in world football; competing for league titles and Champions League trophies. If United need someone who has been there and done it; Godin is their man.
Ezequiel Garay is a player that has interested United for a long time; so don’t be surprised if the club turn back to the Argentine defender one last time.
Garay has been linked with United almost every year over the past few seasons, and is easy to see why.
Towering in the heart of a strong defence; Garay would be a star in the Premier League. Like many on this list, he has been across Europe and won it all and he could really bring that experience to the Man Untied dressing room.
Currently playing in Russia, he could be tempted to a move to a European giant like Manchester United.
Jose Fonte carries less star power than a lot of the names on this list, but in many ways his transfer would make the most sense.
At 32, Fonte is entering the twilight of his career; but has played in a number of countries and has been at the heart of the Southampton defence through the last few years of tumultuous change.
With just two years on his contract and his age getting on; Southampton could look to cash-in on the ageing defender; in hopes of trading in for a newer model.
This could be a deal that makes sense for everyone.
