Former Arsenal forward Charlie Nicholas has claimed that Jack Wilshere is on the right track as the midfielder looks to regain a spot in Arsene Wenger's first XI.

Wilshere was once regarded as one of the best young talents in English football, but a succession of injury problems have harmed the 25-year-old's progress.

He spent last season on loan at Bournemouth, but struggled to make his mark at the Vitality Stadium, and finished the campaign on the sidelines.

Wilshere, who is valued at £16.2m by transfermarkt.co.uk, was widely expected to leave Arsenal during the summer, but the England international stayed at the Emirates Stadium, and has been introduced to the first-team set-up in recent weeks.

Indeed, after playing 90 minutes in the EFL Cup against Doncaster Rovers on Wednesday night, Nicholas believes that Wilshere is ready to stake a claim for a first-team position.

Nicholas told Sky Sports:

"For the first time in a long time I think the signs are swaying towards him getting first-team football again and earning a role in Arsene Wenger's squad.

"He won't start against West Brom and it will probably take him a lot of time to get over his first 90 minutes, when he was probably man-of-the-match, but if if they can get 2-0 up then the crowd would certainly love to see him get 20 minutes."

Arsenal will look to continue their decent run of form when they welcome West Bromwich Albion to the Emirates Stadium in the Premier League on Monday night.
