Dismissed Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has written a six-page letter to Manchester United stating his interest in succeeding Louis van Gaal at Old Trafford, according to The Independent.
The Portuguese trainer was axed from the West London hotseat earlier this season as the Premier League champions toiled in the lower reaches of the table.
United have had an underwhelming campaign to date, with Champions League elimination in the group stages compounded by poor form domestically and a lack of attacking style.
As such, despite his contract running until the end of next season, talk that Van Gaal could leave the Red Devils this summer is starting to gather pace.
Mourinho is reported to have stated his interest at replacing the experienced Dutchman, stating how he would get the historic club back to its former glories.
His appointment would be a controversial one given his two-time affiliation with Chelsea, which would have a section of the United supporters greeting him with a frosty reception.
