Former Everton captain and BBC Football pundit Phil Neville has tipped the Toffees to have a successful season following an impressive summer of transfer business.

While they have lost last season’s top goalscorer Romelu Lukaku to Manchester United in a £75m deal, Ronald Koeman has added seven players to his first team squad and there should be more to come.

Davy Klaassen, Jordan Pickford, Henry Onyekuru, Michael Keane, Sandro Ramirez, Wayne Rooney and Cuco Martina have already arrived at Goodison Park since the end of last season, and if rumours are to be believed then they want to sign Swansea City star Gylfi Sigurdsson and a striker too.

The Merseyside outfit secured a seventh-place finish in the Premier League –and Europa League football as a result – in the previous campaign but Koeman and owner Farhad Moshiri have already shown in the last few weeks that they are keen to try and push on and compete for a top four finish.

Neville, who made more than 300 appearances for Everton after joining them from Manchester United in 2005, says the club must try and follow in the footsteps of Tottenham, who have secured third and second-place finishes in the last two seasons having been in a similar position to the Toffees previously.

The 40-year-old told BBC Football: "Four or five years ago, Tottenham and Everton were on similar levels, Tottenham kicked on and Everton didn't but now I think they are well capable of doing a Tottenham - producing a young team with a brilliant manager in Ronald Koeman.

"Everton have bought quality and what is more exciting is the young players breaking through - couple that with Wayne Rooney and it should be good. Everton could be one of the teams to watch this year."

Koeman’s men face FC Twente in their next friendly on Wednesday before they face either Ruzomberok or SK Brann in the first leg of their Europa League qualifying round tie a week on Thursday.
