Former Liverpool midfielder Jamie Redknapp believes Tottenham Hotspur star Eric Dier is in contention for a place in the England national team, according to reports from the Express.
The 21-year-old was on good form for his side during the 4-1 win over Manchester City at the weekend and was even able to get himself on the score sheet.
Dier joined as a defender, but has now emerged as a strong candidate to play a defensive midfielder role, keeping a number of City players at bay in his latest match.
Redknapp has now tipped Three Lions boss Roy Hodgson to consider the England Under-21 star for a midfield role if he continues to replicate the form he showed against his opponents.
“He is a really intelligent young footballer,” he told the Daily Mail.
“He is quick, passes the ball well and knows his limitations — he is happy to do the dirty work and let others take over.
“Hodgson may have looked at him as a defender but now he is forcing himself into contention as a midfielder, because England haven’t got too many like him.”
He completed the move to White Hart Lane from Sporting Lisbon back in 2014 and is now beginning to establish himself as a key player for manager Mauricio Pochettino.
The player featured 36 times in all competitions last term, scoring a total of two goals while providing a further two assists.
