Former Man United target eyed by Premier League strugglers

Sunderland and Norwich have joined Everton in the race to land free agent Ron Vlaar, according to reports in the Mirror.

The Dutchman suffered a serious knee injury and underwent surgery after leaving Aston Villa at the expiration of his contract in the Midlands.

As a result, the Holland international saw a move to Rome giants Lazio fall through, and has been without a club ever since.

However, the 30-year old has been training with former club AZ Alkmaar in order to maintain his fitness and is now keen on a move back to the Premier League.

It is thought he has turned down offers from clubs in Holland, Italy and Germany in order to earn a move to an English club.

Both the Canaries and the Black Cats find themselves towards the bottom end of the Premier League, with both clubs said to be keen on landing an experienced centre-half in order to help them stave off relegation.

His form for Louis van Gaal’s Dutch national side during the 2014 World Cup earnt the player links with Manchester United, but he has struggled with injuries ever since.

Being a free agent, Vlaar is available to sign outside of transfer window restrictions.
