Christian Eriksen has divided opinion at times this season, and for ex-Tottenham Hotspur boss Glenn Hoddle, the midfielder is not good enough agains top opposition.
The Denmark international is a regular in Mauricio Pochettino’s team having started all but one of Spurs’ Premier League games this season.
In those outings, he has scored seven goals and made 11 others, but Hoddle has questioned whether he is able to step up against ‘big’ teams.
Against the top six league sides, he has only produced one goal and one assist and both of those were against table-toppers Chelsea.
During Tottenham’s failed Champions League stint, he failed to make a significant impact, registering just one assist in the group stage.
While on the Premier League Tonight Show on BT Sport, Hoddle said:
“I’m not sure people like Eriksen do it against the top teams. They need somebody who can really create and really do it like he does against Hull City or Stoke, I have seen him play fantastic in those games. Come to the top six or seven [teams], I don’t think he is the type of player that Tottenham can have.”
Eriksen has performed well in his last couple of outings, creating an assist in a 4-0 romp over Watford and scoring in Spurs’ dramatic 3-1 comeback victory over Swansea City.
