Chelsea midfielder Frank Lampard will miss this weekend's Premier League clash with fourth-placed Blackpool but should return to action in next Wednesday's Carling Cup encounter with Newcastle United.

The former West Ham United star has not played for almost three weeks after having a hernia operation.

He sat out England's two Euro 2012 qualifiers against Bulgaria and Switzerland and did not feature in Chelsea's recent victories at Upton Park and in Slovakia.

Blues boss Carlo Ancelotti confirmed:"Lampard will be out (for the Blackpool match).

"I don't think he'll be able to play on Sunday, but he will be ready to play in the Carling Cup next week.

"He's training but we don't want to take a risk. He has to put more power in his adductor, so he'll have to train again."
