Frank Lampard won’t lift lid on Jose comeback claims

Frank LampardFrank Lampard would not be drawn on talk of Jose Mourinho returning to Chelsea and is ‘not sure’ if he would stay if he did come back.

The 34-year-old England international midfielder is approaching the end of his contract at Stamford Bridge and it appears that he will leave the club at the end of this season as the money men seem reluctant to offer him a deal extension.

As it stands Lampard will depart the Londoners at the same time as the Blues’ interim boss Rafael Benitez, as owner Roman Abramovich looks set to bring in a long-term successor for Roberto Di Matteo, who was sacked in November.

There have been strong rumours that former boss Mourinho is poised to quit Real Madrid for a dramatic return to Stamford Bridge almost five years after he left the club.

Lampard was a key part of Mourinho’s successful Blues side and, while he praised the Portuguese tactician’s credentials, he stopped short of discussing a possible comeback or if it would have any bearing on his future if he did.

He said: “Jose’s an absolutely fantastic manager, one of the legends of the Champions League.

“There’s no doubt about his credentials, whether he comes to Chelsea or stays at Real Madrid or whatever club he goes to, I believe he will be successful.
“That’s all he’s ever done and from working with him I’m very, very sure of that.

“It’s not for me to talk about the decisions. I wouldn’t want to undermine the current manager for the last eight or nine games by giving you a headline like that.

“While there’s a manager in place now, although we know what seems to be coming at the end of the season, I don’t think it’s right to speculate about who the manager will be next season.

“I’m not sure if it affects my decision. If a manager comes in who likes me…. I don’t know.”
