Liverpool’s long term target Clint Dempsey will cost them £10 million, reports the Daily Star.

The Anfield clubs owners Fenway Sports Group yesterday announced on their website that they had signed the American international for £5 million, something Fulham categorically denied, having valued their star man at £10 million.

Dempsey scored 23 goals in a fantastic campaign last year, and has been linked with a move to Merseyside ever since, but the Cottagers are desperate to keep hold of the 29 year old. ‘We would discourage any club from making a bid for him’ announced a Fulham spokesman, who also stated the club had received no formal bids for the American international.

Having already had forwards Andy Johnson and Pavel Pogrebnyak depart this summer, to keep hold of Dempsey is of paramount importance to Martin Jol’s side.

Since taking over as Liverpool manager last month, Brendan Rodgers has already missed out on Gylfi Sigurdsson who joined Spurs, and to miss out on Dempsey would be highly discouraging for the new boss.  However, the 39 year old remains tactful, saying; He’s a very talented player but we don’t like to talk about other clubs’ players.’

Liverpool will be hoping to add to the signing of former Roma striker Fabio Borini earlier on this week.
