Gallas offered one year only

Arsenal chairman Peter Hill-Wood has confirmed that the club have offered central defender William Gallas a one-year contract extension.

The 32-year-old France international was reportedly hoping to be offered a longer deal, but the Gunners have stuck to their policy of offering players over 30 fresh 12-month terms only.

Hill-Wood said:"Arsene Wenger has a policy with players who are aged 30 to offer them one-year extensions.

"He has not asked us to make an exception for William Gallas. If he did, I am sure the board would agree to it.

"It is not out of the question, but it is certainly not on the table at the moment.

"I think it is proper for players of that age to get one-year deals. Then if they do well, they get another year.

"It worked perfectly well for the likes of Dennis Bergkamp."
