Bolton Wanderers chairman Phil Gartside has predicted that the harsh financial climate will lead to a very quiet January transfer window.

Gartside has said that he will allow new boss Owen Coyle to bring new players to the Reebok Stadium this month, but admits the market is extremely slow.

"If there is someone out there that we believe can make the club a difference, we'll go for it," he told The Bolton News.

"Equally, if there are fringe players who feel they can do better at another club, then we'll move them on. It's a trade.

"We still have to balance the books in spite of (owner) Eddie Davies' generosity. We still have to run a business and we have spent a lot of money developing a younger team.

"But I don't think a lot of money is going to get spent in January. Clubs haven't got it. I think most of the money was used up in the summer putting squads together.

"Everyone recognises that it is difficult to find the right player in January. You can bring someone in, but if he is not in the Premier League, he is not going to have the pace.

"Players struggle to understand the league. It's different to France, Spain, Germany, or Italy. So to bring someone in to perform from January onwards, is not an easy thing to do."

Meanwhile, Coyle has said that he is not under pressure to sell defender Gary Cahill, although he would not stand in the way of Danny Shittu and Mustapha Riga leaving the club.Subscribe to Football FanCast News Headlines by Email
